A Visit to Metro Hardwoods

Photos and Text by William Johnston

I recently had an opportunity to visit KCWWG Sponsor Member, Metro Hardwoods in Independence for the  first time.  Below are some photos and comments on some of the shop items that interested me. Not shown is the vast array of domestic and exotic hardwood lumber that runs isle after isle.  I wanted about 17 board feet of Sassafras to play with.  Haven't had any for some time ... just $2.26/board foot.  I also bought a 3 board foot piece of Alder for $6.  You can thoroughly soak alder in water and grill your salmon on it.  Great flavor, even the bears like alder grilled salmon.  See last photo.

Turning Blocks

On display are a number of turning blocks & pen blanks. I purchased a small block (4/4 X 2.25X12 inch) of Brazilian Ebony for $3.21. I'll use this to make a tool.

More Exotic Turning Squires

Lots of Pen Making Supplies and Blanks

A piece of Burl the sizeof an engine block.

Big Bucks $$$

Woodworking Machinery

Lots of small tools on hooks, many only found in catalogues.

Wood finishes.

Stain samples at less than $0.50. Great to try out to see if you have the right color before you by a quart.

Gemlets

But how do you find a pickeroon when you need one?

Wow!

Veneers

Exotic hardwoods in squares but less then lumber size.

I bought a Jatoba turning square (2X2X18) for $5.00

Blanks of domestic hardwood

Ash baseball bat blanks, large diameter maple blanks. Ideas: a workbench vice screw out of ash. Got a threading kit?

Domestic Hardwood Dowels.

All sizes.

Unusual Tape Measures with Surprises

Check them out. You may not of seen anything like these! Tapes are made to be written on in pencil to create a "Story Stick".

Don't know what a "Story Stick" is?

Ask Jeff!

These are waxes to fill holes and blemishes in just about any finish.
