Home Schooled Students Offered Practical Woodworking Course

MERRIAM, Kansas (August 10, 2010) The Kansas City Woodworkers' Guild, located in Merriam, Kansas and in its 26th year, is making available a course in practical woodworking for the home schooled student. 

 “We offer home schooled students, 14 years of age and above, a unique opportunity for a hands-on encounter with the application of practical woodworking”, said Clifford Bell, V.P. of the Guild. “Project planning, applied math & science, and problem-solving in the woodshop help the students in all their other classes.”

The 13 week course (three hours, one day a week) focuses on necessary skills, tools, and techniques to introduce the craft of woodworking and furniture making.  The course successfully meets the needs of multiple experience levels in a safe, well equipped, spacious, supportive, and congenial educational environment.  Students will take pride in their accomplishments and gain self esteem.

The classes will be taught by a Certified Industrial Technology Teacher, with 20 years of public school teaching experience. The class emphasis will always be on SAFETY!  

This fundamental course stresses the historical development of tools & woodworking machinery, workshop safety, and woodworking skills. Students will gain knowledge in the safe use of hand and power tools, woodworking machines, project planning, problem solving, and applied math and science. Students will experience different types of wood and choose their best application. In this project-oriented course in woodworking, students will be assigned to plan and construct several small and medium sized projects.

The Kansas City Woodworkers Guild will now be offering

Introduction to Practical Woodworking class WH101

to the Home-School Associations . 

These are Monday class offerings, 3 hours per class, 13 weeks, starting September 20, 2010.
Morning session 8:00 AM – 11:00 AM, Afternoon Session 12:00 PM – 3:00 PM
Class tuition is $ 185.00, which includes a club Membership thru the end of the year.
Note: classes are for students 14 plus years of age.

The classes will be taught by a Certified Industrial Technology Teacher, with 20 years of public school teaching experience.

Introduction to Machine Woodworking Curriculum 

Course Description:  This fundamental course stresses the historical development of tools & woodworking machine safety, and skills. Students will gain knowledge in the safe use of hand and power tools, machines, project planning, problem-solving, and applied math and science. This is a project-oriented course in woodworking where students will be assigned to construct small and medium sized project.
Required: Safety glasses (which will be provided), and a notebook.
 

Objective:        Students will gain knowledge and skills in working safely and efficiently with hand and power tools.  In addition, they will be introduced to different types of wood and their uses. 

Topics Covered: Safety Measurement & Planning
  Layout  Types of woods    
  Hand and Power Tools Fasteners, Adhesives, and Clamping
  Beginning Joinery Sanding and Finishing                   

Instructional Philosophy and Delivery Plan

Expectation:      In order for the student to work in the shop they will need to pass each Safety Test with an 80% and correct it to 100%.  Students will be expected to meet all the course goals by demonstrating their understanding of basic concepts of each topic area, reading, researching, using the equipment, completing their projects, self assessing, and sharing with the Guild at Show-n-Tell. 

Delivery Method by Instructor:  Instruction will consist of lecture, discussion, and demonstrations.   

Guild Involvement:  Students will also have the opportunity to use the Guild’s resources (library, members, meetings, trips, classes, clinics, and workshops) to enhance their individual interests & goals.   

Assessment:  Students will only be tested on Safety.  Each student will have to pass the safety tests with an 80% and correct it to 100% before using the woodshop.   

Course Goals & Technical Standards

Listening Goal  Students will be expected  to use various listening and viewing strategies in social, academic and occupational situations.  Students will be expected to ask appropriate, focused, and subject-related questions, to interpret the intent of the communication.                       

General Safety:  Demonstrate the core competencies in safety and the efficient use of tools, machines, materials, processes, and applications. 

Types of Wood:  Demonstrate knowledge to recognize different species of wood. 

Measuring, Planning, & Layout:  Apply concepts from mathematics, science and communications in the context of project design and demonstrate knowledge and understanding of project planning and layout. 

Hand and Power Tools:   Demonstrate the core competencies in safety and the efficient use of tools, machines, materials, processes, and applications.

JoineryDistinguish the difference between and describe the purposes for 4-6 different joints.

Fasteners, Adhesives, and Clamping:   Apply the skills and competencies in determining proper wood joints, fasteners, and adhesives used in construction of projects. 

Sanding and Finishing Demonstrate competency in the areas of preparing projects for finishing, then apply stains, and finish to complete the project.

Complete all projects:

bullet 3 projects of instructor's choice (each project 3 weeks)
bullet 4th project (project 3 weeks) students will:
With the approval of the instructor, develop a sketch or working drawing of a project to build, show all dimensions, bill of materials, cut sheet, and a plan of procedure.
