Special Interest Group - Shopsmith

The Kansas City Woodworking Guild announces the forming of the Shopsmith Special Interest Group.

Meets Sunday, August 7 at 2:00 PM at the Shop

All interested members and guests are welcome to attend the Shopsmith SIG gatherings, and specifically Shopsmith owners, prospective owners, and those interested in mainstreaming and using the SIG’s two Shopsmith Mark V’s and related accessories in the Shop.

The Shopsmith Special Interest Group will meet in the Shop this Sunday, August 7 at 2:00 P.M.  A number of people have mentioned tuning the Shopsmith and keeping it tuned while going through it transformations from tablesaw to drill press (horizontal drill press) to lathe and back that we will continue on this subject.  Those with tuning issues are invited to bring the specifics of these issues to the shop on Sunday.  Those with experience with tuning are encouraged to attend and mentor.

So come to the shop on Sunday, August 7 at 2:00 pm … let’s talk Shopsmith.

A Special Interest Group may consist of a small group (usually) of members who share a particular machine, or area of endeavor such as Using Hand Tools, who would like to get together, talk shop, and further their special interest.  Attending a SIG is also a fast track way to learn from fellow members who bring their experiences to share. An ideal group would consist of several members, some of whom would like to learn more about and share their special interest, some who are beginners, and hopefully a mentor with expertise in the special interest.

This SIG will consist of people with an interest in acquiring, using, tuning, and getting the most out of their Shopsmith Mark V and related accessories.

 The group’s focus might include:

bullet

How to acquire a used Shopsmith Mark V and related accessories. How much to pay.

bullet

How to evaluate the condition of the Mark V and tune and maintain the machine for best performance.

bullet

How to use the features of the Mark V.

bullet

Using the Mark V in woodworking applications.

bullet

Using the Mark V in non-woodworking applications that support woodworking.

bullet

Using the Mark V to pull taffy, mix bread dough, and fluff laundry.

bullet

Okay! The Mark V will do it but really ... you shouldn't.

bullet

How to defend the Mark V in conversation against all enemies both foreign and domestic.

Likely Structure of the Meetings

  1. Show and Tell.
  2. Discussion.
  3. Demonstrations
  4. Program (either by members of the SIG, someone from the Guild, or someone else).
